Thirty Years of Success Stories
This program has been so easy for my resistant, mildly dyslexic 10 year old. It’s such simple basic steps.
Thank you for helping me teach my student. This is the first time writing has made sense for him.
With Write by Number, my previously resistant writer now looks forward to writing! It turned what felt like an abstract concept into a reproducible model for writing. As a math minded mom of four, it has given me the confidence and tools to teach my children how to write. I also love being able to go at each child’s own pace and not having to purchase new books each year. Thank you!
WBN is a great option for special needs students because you just move through each stage as they are ready. The teacher guide has examples of students with all different abilities and addresses speeding up or slowing down the program. It’s a curriculum that can grow with you and your learner.
As a college professor turned homeschool mom I can’t tell you how awesome this program is. I wish all my former students had learned these skills coming into college.
We started using this program this year with my 3rd and 6th grader. It has detailed explanations for each step as to examples and expectations and rubric. There are no worksheets although I have copied and pasted some of the appendix pages. My 3rd grader is working slowly through it, he has gotten through 2 steps, my 6th grader is going faster and is on step 6. My boys have already shown progress. The 3rd grader is writing more than he has ever written. The 6th grader is more organized. We’ve tried multiple programs (WriteShop, IEW, BookShark, Writing & Rhetoric) and I am really loving this program and I can totally see how it can last until grade 12.
I recently ordered this for my boys thanks to [a review video on YouTube]. We have just started and only in stage 1, but my 3rd grader has already told me how much he likes it.
I bought this after watching [a review video of WBN] and we have used it consistently for the past 4 weeks and I am really liking it. My 8 yr old reluctant writer just wrote a 5 sentence paragraph all by himself today and it was a great paragraph. My 11 yr old is moving faster through it but he is doing well with it as well.
I can’t tell you enough how impressed I am by your curriculum! In the past few days I have read through most of the teacher and student books and I feel like I finally found what I have been looking for. I am so excited to use a mastery based writing program. While we typically work towards mastery in every subject, it is easier said than done when a curriculum is not set up that way. You have created a gem!
We are really enjoying the simplicity of this! Makes success easy.
I just wanted to let you know that we have been working with your program a few days each week since August. My daughter loves it, and it is going very well. Her attention to detail has improved dramatically, and she really likes being able to write about whatever she wants. The structure of the 12323 paragraph has helped her express her ideas in a more orderly way and I love seeing the progress she has made!
This is brand-new as a program available to you, but it was the system the author (who happens to be my niece) used when she was also a teacher in MY kids’ Junior/Senior High School, in conjunction with the classes she taught.
One daughter told me about how it really helped having this before heading to college and doing all the work for two separate Bachelor of Science degrees over the years. Just one small guideline that my daughter shared with me out of this program improved the writing that I do in my work for the church.
It would be wonderful to give more people the tools to help organize their thinking, writing, or speech-giving, and help their ideas come across better to more people in turn.
I wanted to let you know that we are doing very well so far with Write by Number. My 9 year old especially has been able to write summary paragraphs so easily when asked for by her charter school. I tell her to just put a 12323 paragraph and add a concluding sentence at the end, which perfectly meets the requirements of a 5-6 sentence summary…. Thank you for this program! I’m so happy I stumbled across it in the Great Homeschool Conventions, 2020 virtual convention.
My teenage son is dyslexic and dysgraphic, and Write by Number has been a huge help in taking the pain out of writing practice. And if texting the paragraph helps get it done, great.
Both of my daughters have had the blessing of being taught Write by Number. Because of that, my oldest daughter was writing at a collegiate level when she was a junior in high school. Now that she’s in college she scores 100% on many of her writing assignments. My younger daughter is my reluctant learner. She struggles with creative writing and school in general. This curriculum has equipped her with the tools she needs to help her feel more in control over her assignments. Where there was once tears and apprehensiveness, she is now no longer intimidated when assigned essays and book reports. She continues to improve as she applies the invaluable and well structured guidelines in this curriculum. Thank you, Laurena, for no more tears in writing!
I was taught to write using this system as a junior-high student, and it has molded the way I write ever since. I have never seen another system that lays out the progression from simple thoughts all the way to full essays in such a logical and easy-to-use format. As a pastor, I write for a living, and my job would be exponentially more difficult had I not learned to write well using this system. I can’t imagine having to make it through college without having learned this way of organizing my thoughts and words.
Yes, there are a lot of scratched off words and scribbles, but to see all these words written by this kid who hates writing is amazing. We switched to @write_by_number a couple months ago and writing tasks have become so much easier. He’s been writing full sentences and creating actual paragraphs and not fighting about it. This writing curriculum has been a huge game changer for us.
The fact that [my son] was able to write his first power sentence without needing any corrections shows that he is more than ready to tackle this task! He was shocked that it was so easy!
Laurena Townsend has written a program focused on teaching the art of writing to any student at any age. Many of you reading this newsletter teach English as a Second Language (ESL), some of whom struggle to logically set out paragraphs, write with personality, and organize their ideas, thoughts, and arguments into proper English form. The steps and writing patterns in the textbook are imaginatively arranged like a Paint By Number palette, encouraging the student to try the next step!
Write by Number has been a great tool! It allows me to teach to my student’s level and pace, and it takes the guesswork out of writing instruction. I am much more confident when it comes to teaching writing, and my daughter can write at her ability level without pressure or judgment. Thank you for the tools to make this happen!
I stopped at Stage 10 after taking two years of high school English with Mrs. Townsend. In 2019, I took the College Composition CLEP test and scored a 60.
As a dual enrollment student, I have earned credit for college English. I never thought I could do it because of my dyslexia. Thanks, Mrs. Townsend!
Thanks to this program I have gotten super ahead of my grade level! I’ve learned so much and use that knowledge almost every day.
This program really prepared me for writing in high school as it helped me to excel in my grammar and overall sentence structure.
I use it all the time because I know how to organize my thoughts. I just have to fill it in.
This made college easier than high school. I knew exactly how to structure every essay.
In standardized testing, I’ve done really well on the essay portions because of what I learned in Write by Number.
I still hate writing, but now I can write what I need to for trade school.
I have taught third graders for over twenty years. This is the first year I’ve used Write By Number. I have enjoyed working on writing one step at a time. I especially love that the students have to have their letters formed correctly and their words and sentences spaced correctly before they go on to more writing. I like that they have to keep rewriting it until they get it done accurately. Starting with one sentence isn’t so much to have to fix, and they develop proper habits working on a few skills at a time.
Normally when I gave a writing assignment I always heard, “I don’t know what to write.” With this program, I’ve never had that issue.
At this moment in time, it feels like Write by Number is the perfect writing curriculum for us and for my kids. I looked high and low for a writing program that we would enjoy and that would work well for over a year. It’s been phenomenal so far, and I’m beyond relieved that we discovered it.
We are loving [WBN]. My son’s writing has improved greatly, and he likes it because he can write on any topic he wants using the writing format.
This is a fantastic program for someone who wants a systematic and explicit approach to writing without feeling too formulaic. It gives the flexibility to teach through any content and can be Fast-Tracked or paced slowly depending on your student’s needs. My son really enjoys the way it’s broken down, and the color-coded outlines make sense to him.
This is not your ordinary writing curriculum… it’s designed to be used at any age or grade level, from early elementary all the way through high school graduation, giving students all the tools they need to write really well. The program’s step-by-step approach grows with your child, teaching everything from simple sentences to full eight-paragraph essays. I haven’t seen anything like it on the market!
