Write by Number has been a wonderful addition to my current writing curriculum that has really improved my middle school students’ writing skills. The program gives them a specific structure to follow, requiring them to perfect one step before moving them on the next. This structure gives my students a “formula” to follow when doing any kind of writing. My students get excited to do Write by Number and actually ask me to do it if I don’t have it planned! How can I say no to writing?
I am able to implement it to my class for about 10 minutes a few times each week. I keep a running record of my students’ progress and go through a new stage with a student when they are ready. That small amount of time has made a difference that I have noticed in their writing in all subjects.
Students are able to apply the structure they have learned to other content areas shortly after working with the first stage. It also gives the other subject area teachers an easy way to remind students how to structure their writing in their class which gives them extra practice.
This is only our first year, but having it implemented throughout the school makes me excited to see how the students’ writing transforms throughout the years by the time they join my class!
